Why “That’s not my job” is the worst answer ever.

“That’s not my job.” Is possibly the worst thing you can say in a professional setting. Why?

First, it immediately shows everyone on your team that you either don’t know how to do that specific task, or you’re lazy and unwilling to help solve a problem.

If it’s the latter, you’re probably the least liked person in your company… congrats.

If it’s because you don’t know how to do the task that has been asked, then lie about not knowing it, learn how to do it, and get it done. It’s truly that simple…

As goes for life in general.

One of the key things I live by is “never stop learning.” The second you stop learning new things, especially in MARKETING, you’re going to be replaced by someone who is willing to learn every aspect of not only their job, but others as well.

How to respond to “that’s not my job”

I like to immediately ask the question “well, what is your job?”

You can then expect a colleague or employee to respond quickly by telling you what their job title is. Job titles, are just that – a title. They mean very little (outside corporate America) and mean very little to the people you’re working with.

The answer here is that everyone’s job is to GROW THE BUSINESS, TOGETHER. So… if you have been asked to do something that is a shared goal or KPI of the team, then your best bet is to probably just do it.

[End rant here]

Hope you’ve enjoyed this growth marketing tip!

Cheers!
